Rationale for using a joint colour scale instead of single scales for analyzing groups of data. On display are the colour scales for the change in mean temperature between 1971–2000 and 2071–2100 according to the cascade SRES A1B→ECHAM5/MPI-OM run 1→WETTREG2010 (Kreienkamp et al., 2010) in Germany. The left-hand side shows the colour scales for the four seasons and the right-hand side shows a unified scale covering the whole range of signals in all four seasons. The unified scale is further modified to yield range separations that are either whole or half degrees.
