Table 2 Selected landscape metrics following the definitions of McGarigal and Ene (2012)

From: The effects of anthropogenic landscape change on the abundance and habitat use of terrestrial large mammals of Nech Sar National Park

Spatial metrics

Abbreviation

Description

Core area

CA

Class area is a measure of landscape composition; specifically, how much of the landscape is comprised of a particular patch type where the range is explained by CA > 0

Percent of landscape

PLAND

Measures habitat extent in relative terms of the target land cover class (0 < PLAND < 100)

Number of patches

NP

Number of patches in the landscape of the same LULC class (N ≥ 1)

Mean patch size

MPS

It measures the average mean surface of patches and it is used to evaluate landscape fragmentation

Interspersion and juxtaposition index

IJI

Measure of evenness of patch adjacencies equals 100 for even and approaches 0 for uneven adjacencies

Mean near neighbor distance

MNN

Measures the degree of isolation and fragmentation of a patch

Mean patch fractal dimension

MPFD

Measures the shape complexity. Mean fractal dimension approaches one for shapes with simple perimeters and approaches two when shapes are more complex
